Loose table legs and wobbly chairs in your favorite sitting areas not only are annoying, but can lead to cracked joints or broken furniture if ignored. The good news is that most loose furniture legs can be fixed quickly with minimal tools, and with the right approach, you can prevent them from loosening again.
Why Furniture Legs Loosen Over Time
Furniture legs often loosen due to regular use and movement (and bumping/sliding the furniture themselves), where small movements between the legs and main body cause the bolts that hold the parts together to loosen each time. After repeating this over long periods of time, the legs can become very loose, causing the table/chair to become completely loose.
Tighten and Inspect the Hardware First
Start by checking all bolts, screws, and brackets (if possible, as with chairs, flip them over to get easy access).
In each case, you should tighten all the fasteners (alternating), but make sure not to over-tighten, which can strip the fasteners or damage the furniture. In certain cases, you may need to take damaged screws/bolts down to your local home center to find an appropriate replacement.
Tip: Using a “threadlocker” on the tips of fasteners can help prevent future loosening, as the liquid dries in the threads provides resistance to the vibrating/loosening of the fastener. Using a little bit can go a long way.
Repair Stripped Holes or Loose Wood Joints
If screws won’t tighten because the wood is stripped, you can use wood filler or wood glue with toothpicks to rebuild the hole. Once dried, you will be able to reinstall the screw as you previously did during assembly. In some cases where hole repair is not plausible, you can drill new holes (not too close to the original!) and use new fasteners.
In instances where the furniture relied on glued joints, cleaning off the surface on each piece then re-gluing and clamping would be the best option for a solid repair.
Check Leg Levelers and Floor Contact
One last thing to check before you call the repair a success is to confirm whether all of the legs are touching the floor. Uneven floors can cause furniture to rock, which accelerates loosening. In order to prevent this going forward, you will want to ensure all legs are sitting evenly on the floor by:
-
Adjust leg levelers if present
-
Add felt pads or shims where needed
Stability reduces stress on joints and hardware.
