Furniture assembly can quickly turn into a time-consuming and frustrating task — especially when dealing with many similar parts or instructions aren’t clear. Whether you’re assembling a single piece or an entire room, these tips can help you get the job done faster and with better results.
1. Unbox and Sort Everything First
Before you start, take a look at the instructions page with the list of parts/fasteners that you will be using. If it makes sense, open boxes and group similar pieces together. Take a small containers to sort screws, bolts, and hardware (this will help avoid that one screw that rolls away, never to be found again). This will help the install process go smoother as you will know where to go to get the required pieces/parts for each step of the way.
2. Read the Instructions All the Way Through
Taking a few minutes to read the instructions from start to finish, so you can understand the overall assembly order. This may also help you catch key details that you might have missed when following the instructions during the build (while holding two different pieces together with one hand and a screwdriver in the other!). I find that doing this helps me avoid mistakes that require backtracking or disassembly later down the line.
3. Use the Right Tools
Most furniture nowadays include basic tools to be used for assembly, but typically these tools are not ideal for an efficient install. Most of the time the tools do not have the right size (e.g. too small to get the right leverage or shaped in a way that requires constant resetting of tools). Using dedicated tools, such as screw drives, allen keys, and even power tools will can speed things up and avoid getting sore wrists/forearms. Keep in mind not to over-tighten screws, which can strip hardware or damage panels.
4. Work on a Flat, Protected Surface
Assembling furniture on an uneven floor (runaway screws) can throw off alignment and slow you down. Clear out a wide flat surface and protect floors with cardboard or tarp to prevent scratches to both the furniture and your home.
