Replacing your home’s air filter is one of the easiest and most important maintenance tasks for keeping your heating and cooling system running efficiently. A clean filter helps improve indoor air quality, protects your HVAC system, and can even reduce energy costs.

Unfortunately, many homeowners forget about this small but important component until airflow becomes restricted or dust begins to build up in the home.

Below are a few key things to know about replacing your air filter.

Why Air Filters Matter

Your HVAC air filter helps capture dust, pollen, pet dander, and other airborne particles before they circulate throughout your home. As the filter collects debris, it gradually becomes clogged.

A dirty air filter can cause:

  • Reduced airflow from vents

  • Higher energy usage

  • Poor indoor air quality

  • Extra strain on your HVAC system

In extreme cases, severely clogged filters can contribute to system overheating or frozen coils.

How Often Should You Replace an Air Filter?

How frequently you should replace your air filter depends on several factors, including home size, pets, and system usage.

General guidelines include:

  • Every 1–3 months for most homes

  • Every 1–2 months if you have pets

  • More frequently during heavy heating or cooling seasons

Homes with allergies, pets, or higher dust levels may benefit from more frequent replacement.

Choosing the Right Filter

Air filters come in different sizes and filtration levels. Before purchasing a replacement, check the filter size printed on the existing filter.

You’ll also notice a MERV rating, which indicates how effectively the filter captures particles.

Common options include:

  • Lower MERV ratings (6–8): basic dust filtration

  • Mid-range MERV (8–11): improved household air quality

  • Higher MERV (11–13): better filtration for allergens and fine particles

Higher filtration can improve air quality, but your HVAC system must be able to handle the airflow resistance.

Installing the New Filter Correctly

When replacing the filter:

  1. Turn off the HVAC system if possible, or at minimum make sure the system is not running.

  2. Remove the old filter from the return vent or furnace slot.

  3. Check the airflow arrow printed on the filter.

  4. Insert the new filter so the arrow points toward the HVAC unit (direction of airflow).

Installing the filter backwards can reduce its effectiveness and restrict airflow.

Don’t Forget to Check Your Filter Location

Depending on the system, air filters may be located:

  • In a slot near the furnace or air handler
  • In a filter cabinet attached to the HVAC system

Some homes may have multiple filters.
