Replacing a showerhead is one of the simplest upgrades you can make in your bathroom. It can improve water pressure, enhance comfort, and give your space a more modern look — all without a major renovation.

Homeowners often upgrade showerheads to:

  • Improve water pressure
  • Replace clogged or mineral-filled fixtures
  • Switch to a handheld or multi-function model
  • Update the look of the bathroom

Even a basic replacement can make a noticeable difference.

What You’ll Need

Most showerhead replacements require only a few tools:

  • Adjustable wrench (optional)
  • Plumber’s tape (Teflon tape)
  • Cloth or towel (to protect finishes)

Basic Installation Steps

  1. Unscrew the old showerhead (by hand or with a wrench)
  2. Clean the threads on the shower arm – this is VERY important to prevent leaks between the shower arm and the new shower head.
  3. Wrap plumber’s tape around the threads (wrapping in same direction of the screw threads)
  4. Screw on the new showerhead and tighten snugly – If a wrench needs to be used, use a cloth/towel when clamping to avoid surface damage to the shower head.

Be careful not to overtighten, especially with plastic fittings.

Things to Consider When Choosing a New Showerhead

  • Flow rate (GPM) for water efficiency
  • Spray settings (rainfall, massage, etc.)
  • Fixed vs. handheld models
  • Compatibility with existing shower arm

When to Call a Professional

While most replacements are straightforward, issues like stuck fittings, leaks, or worn plumbing connections may require additional work.
